The General Automotive Building sits at the eastern edge of the Pearl District facing the North Park Blocks. The existing building occupies a quarter block with a three-story portion on the south half of the site with a two-story annex to the north completing the building footprint.
SERA renovated and updated the existing building, with an addition of a third story above the annex and new fourth and fifth stories above the original building. The new fourth and fifth floors will be set slightly back from the existing facade and terraces are located at the building corners to lighten the visual weight of the upper stories and clearly reveal the building structure. Upper floors will be converted to office space and the ground floor into prime retail and restaurant space. New large storefronts will grace the building to enhance retail presence.
On the building interior, a “raw” aesthetic unifies the design. New structural elements are left unpainted and exposed, old masonry is left exposed and existing heavy timber framing is also on display. The overall effect will be simple, open spaces whose character is created by keeping finishes natural, minimal and us unrefined as possible. |
